The Layout

As you can see I'm a very visual person and laying out the whole book on butcher paper just works best for me. I drew 14, 2-page spreads and wrote the page numbers of the book. (A picture book starts on page 7 if you count the cover and the end papers as pages too) Doing it this way, I get a better feel on how things flow. I have the manuscript and write what I want on each page of the book using post-it notes (that way if I change my mind or want to try something else, it's easier than an erasing it.) I only got about half way through when I realized I needed to make some adjustments on the story. That's what I'll be working on for a couple of days when I get a moment. However, I do need to get it off the table and tack it on the wall, because my art supervisor (my cat, Baby Kitty), walks on it too much and moves my post-its around when I'm not at home. Maybe she's editing it????

Painting Day

I'm nearly three hours behind my Saturday schedule. Where does the time go? Oh, yeah I slept in. Ahhhhhh that was nice. So here I am, finally at the "drawing board" with the blank page in front of me. GerAmyUm is a story I've had in my head for awhile and it's starting to take up entirely too much creative space. It's ready to be born. I need to get it out, but not just in words, but in pictures too. My goals today is simply to lay out the words and come up with the sketches for the rest of the book. Hopefully, if time allows, I'll get to dip my brush in color. So here's where it happens in corner of a room by a window and of course, flowers nearby. The afternoon calls for the music of Madeleine Peyroux. Au revoir.

Picture Book

I certainly meant to start on my picture book "GerAmyUm: An Awful and Glorious Tale of Growing" but didn't get to it. I'm hoping to go through the creation of it in various stages on the blog. But I was distracted by many things. The good distractions - The arrival of my Amy Butler fabrics - Yippee and trying to figure out what I want to sew first. Think it will be the apron. Then, my ancient 5 pound, 3 second delay digital camera broke. And preparing for the neighborhood yard sale. There is always something that seems to block that wonderful creative time.

... and then the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. - Anais Nin

Today when I was painting these Gerber daisies for my friend Deb's birthday, I thought of this quote. As this is my first blog, in many ways it's a bursting from my tight little secure bud of not showing my art work. But here I am finally... saying "I'm an artist" outloud. Better late than never ...
